Original article:
I was walking through my local supermarket when I saw a man who looked to be in his mid-40s. He had a scraggly beard, and was wearing an old hat with a dented brim which seemed to be several decades out of style. As he approached the checkout line in front of me, I noticed that he held a few items loosely clutched in his hand.
When it was his turn at the cashier, she asked him if he had any coupons and he responded by rummaging through his bag. After finding nothing but crumpled receipts, he sighed heavily and seemed to give up hope of getting a discount.
Upon seeing this, I felt compelled to help out. I knew that many stores offered discounts for military veterans or senior citizens at the checkout line. The man looked like a veteran, so I took my own receipt from my wallet as proof.
I then walked up to him and sd, Sir, you look like someone who might qualify for some discounts. Here's your receipt; I'm not sure if it will help, but maybe this one too.
To my surprise, his face lit up with a smile, thanked me profusely and immediately handed over the cashier all the coupons he could find in his bag.
After that experience, I decided to always keep receipts handy, just in case someone might need them. This small act of kindness made both myself and others feel good about it.
Reworked article:
As I traversed through my local grocery store recently, my eyes fell upon a man who appeared around mid-40s. His scraggly beard contrasted with his weathered hat, its faded brim speaking volumes about its age as well as its history, seemingly from another era. As he approached the checkout line ahead of me, I observed him holding several items loosely in his hand.
Upon reaching the cashier's sle, she queried if he had any coupons with him. He responded by rummaging through his bag but found nothing more than crumpled receipts, leading to a heavy sigh and evident disappointment as he seemed to lose hope of receiving any discount.
Witnessing this scenario, an empathetic urge prompted me to intervene. Familiarity with store policies revealed that many establishments offered discounts for veterans or senior citizens at the checkout line. Given his appearance suggesting a veteran's status, I pulled out my own receipt from my wallet as proof.
I walked up to him and kindly informed him, Sir, you appear to be someone who might qualify for some discounts here. Here is your receipt; it might not necessarily work, but perhaps this one too.
Much to my surprise, a genuine smile spread across his face as he thanked me profusely before immediately presenting all the coupons he could find in his bag to the cashier.
Subsequently inspired by this experience, I now always keep receipts on hand. Not only did this small act of kindness uplift both my spirits and those around me, it also reminded us that even a simple gesture can make a significant impact on someone's day.
